30 Years Since Albanians Toppled Bust of Enver Hoxha
The 30th anniversary of the fall of the bust of former dictator Enver Hoxha is marked this Saturday, February 20, 2021.
On February 20, 1991, thousands of citizens took to the streets to overthrow the symbol of communism, a few months after the old regime living in its last days had allowed political pluralism.
The ouster of the dictator's bust was prompted by a hunger strike launched by several hundred students to strip the university from the dictator's name. This was one of the most prominent events that influenced the total collapse of the communist regime in Albania.
The moment when the statue of Enver Hoxha was overthrown that cold February day by force, but also dragged down is known as the symbolic act of overthrowing the dictatorship.
February 20 has been designated as the Day of National Remembrance for the martyrs and victims of the communist regime and marked the end of the dictatorship in Albania.
