Albania’s EU Talks Won’t Open Until Criteria Are Met; SMI

Vice Chair of Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI) Erisa Xhixho has emphasized Friday that European Union accession negotiations will not open for Albania until the country has completed all the conditions set by the European Council.

Xhixho released this statement following Member of European Parliament David Lega’s clarification that the European Parliament (EP) on Albania report says the MEPs backs up the convening of the first intergovernmental conference (IGC), and the start of accession negotiations without further delay, but not specified that this must happen “following the complete fulfilment of conditions”.

Besides, SMI’s official specified that the non-opening of talks until the full completion of EU Council conditions is the truth that all Albanians must keep in mind, despite the propaganda of the Socialist Party (SP).

“There can be no opening of negotiations for Albania without fulfilling one by one of the conditions set by the EC.

Today, the rapporteur for Albania in the European Parliament, David Lega, requested the correction of the official notification of the EP, for the recommendation to start negotiations for our country.

This is the truth that all Albanians should know, beyond the false propaganda of the Renaissance, which has celebrated several times until today dates for opening of negotiations, but which never arrived. Integration does not want words, much less deceptions, it wants concrete actions and realizations”, highlighted Xhixho.

Earlier on, MEP Lega tweeted that “The EP press release on the EP Albania report states that we support the convening of the first IGC, and the start of accession negotiations without further delay. BUT forgets to mention "...following the complete fulfilment of conditions set by the EU Council.

This is an factual, very important error as the conditionality is vital in this context. The press release will be updated, on my request”.
