Albanian Great Writer Passes Away Aged 91
The writer Naum Prifti, one of the most prominent names of contemporary Albanian literature, has passed away at the age of 91. He died in the USA, where he lived for years.
Naum Prifti, novelist, storyteller, playwright, screenwriter, critic, fabulist, creator of folklore and master of Albanian pronunciation, is one of these multidimensional figures, who withstood the years of dictatorship with dignity and found his place even after it.
Naum Prifti was born in Rehovo, Kolonje, on March 7, 1932, where he completed elementary school. In 1953, he graduated from the Medical Polytechnic in Tirana. He works for a year as an assistant doctor at the Korça Sanatorium. Passionate about literature, he continues his studies in Albanian Language and Literature at the State University of Tirana. During the years 1954-1960, he served as an editor in the magazine Hosteni. While from 1960-67 as an editor in the magazine "Ylli". He then worked as a teacher from 1967-70 in Divjakë, Lushnje.
In 1970-72, he was responsible as editor for the newsletter "Children's Stage", at the Central House of Popular Creativity, Tirana and as a theater inspector at the Ministry of Education and Culture during 1974-76. In these years, he also served as an external lecturer for Albanian Literature at the University of Tirana. In 1991, he emigrated to America (New York), where he continued to give his help to the Albanian community there and to Albanian Literature. In 1995, he was elected secretary of the Vatra Pan-Albanian Federation, a position he held until his death. With the creation of the Association of Albanian-American Writers, they elect him as its president. He has won many awards for literary works such as volumes of stories, novels, children's literature, humor and film scripts.
In 2001, he was honored by the Ministry of Culture and the League of Writers with the award: "Silver Feather", for the volume with the legend "Mother of the Sun". The "Golden Feather" award for the volume of humorous stories and sketches "As Miço, As Muço" from the Albanian-American Writers' Association, New York, 2003. For his long, continuous literary and artistic work, he has been decorated from the People's Assembly with the Labor Medal and the "2nd Class Naim Frashëri Order".
His literary creativity is diverse and spans several genres: stories, dramas, comedies, novels, film scripts, pieces for puppet theater, scripts for cartoons, biographies, critical articles, journalism, etc. There are almost 100 literary works, more than years of life and twice half a century of creativity.
The story: "Winter of Hunger" won the Honor Prize, in the International Literary Competition of Maison Naaman pour la Culture, 2004-2005. The author was accepted as an Honorary member of the Naji Naaman Cultural Association.
