Durres, Police Confiscates Medicines Smuggled from Italy
A social worker in an asylum in Italy, Age Biba, 56 years old from the city of Mat has been arrested by the police this Friday in connection with the seizure of about 2 tons of medicine in the Port of Durres this morning. Meanwhile, Alfred Përleka, 33 years old, resident of Lezha, has been declared wanted, Head of Services at the Local Health Care Unit of Lezha.
According to the police, the medicines seized in the Port of Durrës were loaded in a warehouse for the collection of humanitarian aid in Florence, Italy in order to transport them to Albania. The persons involved in this scheme had stated that the medicines were humanitarian aid for an association in the city of Lezha.
The materials have already been handed over to the Prosecutor's Office at the Durrës Court of First Instance against the citizens A. B. and A. P., as suspects for committing the criminal offenses "Smuggling of licensed goods" and "Abuse of duty".
"The police operation codenamed "Aids" is finalized. Operation by the Sector for Investigation of Economic and Financial Crime in DVP Durrës, in cooperation with Customs Investigation specialists. A considerable amount of smuggled drugs is seized. A social worker of a private institution for the care of the elderly is handcuffed, and the head of Services at the Local Health Care Unit of Lezha was declared wanted.
