EPP Group Calls on Premier to Respect Venice’s Opinion for E. Code

Vice-Chair of the EPP Group in the European Parliament Andrey Kovatchev stressed Monday that Albania’s Electoral Code must be in accordance with Venice Commission’s opinion.

He called on Prime Minister Edi Rama and the country’s Parliament to respect this while informing that the backs up European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Oliver Varhelyi’s attitude on this.

Earlier today, Commissioner Varhelyi said “I trust Venice Commission will provide swift advice to Albanian stakeholders on the implementation of the Constitutional Changes of 30 July. Parliament should consider waiting for a revote to take this advice into account. Look forward to free&fair elections in April 2021”.

“I support Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi 's stance! The Electoral code should be in line with the opinion of the Venice Commission in any case, as it would be in favour of the democracy in Albania. I call on PM Rama and the Albanian Parliament to respect this” tweeted Kovatchev.

In the meantime, Member of European Parliament David Lega also called on the Albanian Parliament and PM Rama to wait for Venice Commission’s opinion on the Electoral Code amendments.
