Greek Minister Seeks Full Clarification of Katsifas Case
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias has ordered the services of the ministry he heads and the Greek embassy in Tirana to closely monitor the "Katsifas" case. The news is reported by sources for the Greek media "Protothema".
Meanwhile, the family of the 35-year-old seeks the support of Greece to complete the investigation into the death of their son, stating that he was a Greek citizen who according to them died to raise the Greek flag in an area of Albania where the Greek minority lives.
Referring to the developments of the previous day, where the Court of Gjirokastra rejected the request of the prosecutor to terminate the investigation, the Greek media writes that the differences between the chief judge and the prosecutor returned the case once again.
The Court of First Instance in Gjirokastra rejected the request of prosecutor Julian Tsafka to terminate the investigation into the death of the 35-year-old. It requested additional investigative actions in accordance with legal provisions. The final report is now expected to be published in mid-December.
Greek media accuse the Albanian side that they tried to draw conclusions regarding the death of the 35-year-old. This development comes three years after the death of the Greek minority man. The article states that the most important evidence for what happened on the day of the event is the material recorded by the cameras carried by RENEA forces and the cameras of the helicopter and drone that was operating that day over the area.
A relative of Konstandin Kastfifa says that the Albanian justice since last year is trying to qualify Katsifa's death as a suicide. "Since last year we have known their methods of calling it suicide. In April 2021 the Gjirokastra prosecutor spoke of suicide. But neither the family nor the President of the Court accepted it. We request the publication of the RENEA video. And if one in 1 million Albanians is right we will apologize. But after we saw the video," he said.
"It is not possible to commit suicide with two bullets in the heart. It is murder. He neither ran nor left. He was unarmed. He was killed from a distance of 10 meters. There is no crime more serious than this. He was killed because he defended the right to raise the Greek flag in his country. According to the agreement that Albania has also signed", he adds, emphasizing that the family will go to the European Court of Human Rights in case justice is not done.
Konstantinos Katsifas passed away on October 28, 2018, during an exchange of fire with RENEA forces. The 35-year-old was part of the Land Forces Special Forces battalion in Greece, while on the day of the Greek national holiday, which commemorates the beginning of the war with Italy, he fired a Kalashnikov at a police patrol in the village, endangering the lives of the police officers, who thankfully survived.
After being located by the police in Bularat, Katsifas did not obey the order to drop his weapon, to surrender, refusing, and even shooting at the blues. He opened fire on police officers in bursts for more than 30 minutes. His death brought a lot of tensions with Greece, while the relatives of the 35-year-old have raised a series of claims on this issue.
