Justice Reform Is Key to EU Accession; Ambassador Soreca

The EU Ambassador in Tirana, Luigi Soreca stated this Friday that the Justice Reform is the key towards EU Accession.

Soreca gave strong messages for the Justice Reform, in the conference on "The Role of Self-Governing Institutions of Justice".

In his speech, the EU chief diplomat emphasized the important files, which according to him, should be addressed, even with the support of the government.

According to him, Vetting should continue and be completed as soon as possible, adding that Justice Reform should be irreversible.

"The reform was essential for Albania and is giving the first results. The SPAK has taken the former head of the Constitutional Court to court and is investigating 23 others.

Justice reform needs to be completed and new institutions need to show leadership. There are some important files that need to be addressed. The government has a duty to support you. It is urgent that the Vetting process be completed as soon as possible, but while maintaining the integrity of the process. This will extend the mandate of IQC (Independent Qualification Commission) members and commissioners. Reform must be irreversible.

Vetting should continue, but the term of the Vetting bodies should be extended. The Parliament should consult with all actors. Consolidating Justice Reform should be key.

Judicial reform is bringing concrete results, which were unimaginable, such as 23 criminal proceedings against former judges dismissed by Vetting, including former judges of the High Court and the Constitutional Court. Justice reform is and will remain a key priority for the EU. So far, 55 million euros have been invested for the Reform", said Ambassador Soreca.
