Kosovo's School Year Resumes after Five-Week Protest

New school year in Kosovo started this Monday after a delay of five weeks, following the protest of teachers, who demanded an increase of salaries, has ended.

Strike in education and public administration, at the local and central level, started on August 25 of this year, but was suspended after the vote of the trade unionists' membership.

On their part, the trade unionists have held the strike with a key demand for the distribution of 100 EUR for workers, for each month, until the entry into force of the Law on wages.

However, the government has approved an aid package - due to the increase in inflation - and 50 EUR have been allocated to all public sector workers.

By mid-September, it was confirmed that the gatherings would continue. At the time, after the meeting with Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, the chairman of the United Union of Education, Rrahman Jashari, confirmed that the strike in education and public administration would continue.

According to him, Kurti did not accept their main request, the 100 EUR allowances until the approval of the Salary Law.

On Setember 13, it was reported that Jashari added that the prime minister has remained steadfast against the request, after presenting the package where 50 EUR is allocated to the public sector until the end of the year.

Head of the United Union of Education, Science and Culture of the Republic of Kosovo (SBASHK) underlined that this was unacceptable for union members.
