Kosovo Willing to Help Greece after Powerful Quake

Minister of Defense in Kosovo, Armend Mehaj, has announced Monday that the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) is willing to support the Greek authorities, after the 5.5 magnitude earthquake.

Through a social networks statement, Minister Mehaj underlined that the KSF is ready to help Albania and North Macedonia if they have suffered damage after this earthquake.

“Dear citizens,

The Ministry of Defense, last night we shared our concern with you on the occasion of the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the northwest of Florina, Greece, where among the 7 affected countries in the region was our country.

Although there are still no reports of damage or casualties, we express our full readiness to support the authorities of Greece, or if they have suffered, Albania and Macedonia, with our specialist capacities of the KSF to respond, manage and remedy the consequences”, proclaimed Mehaj.

Earlier today, the Department of Seismology at the Institute of Geosciences (IGJEUM), reacted regarding the earthquake that shook the north of Greece last night.

The tremors that were felt in Albania had their epicenter on the border between North Macedonia and Greece. According to preliminary data from IGJEUM, the epicenter was about 40 km northeast of Bilisht with a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale. The intensity of the earthquake is estimated at 6 points according to the MSK-64 scale. 

"On 09/01/2022, at 22:43 (local time), the IGJEUM Seismological Monitoring Network recorded an earthquake of size M5.6 according to the Richter scale, with a focal depth of 9 km. The epicenter is located 40 km northeast of Bilisht. The intensity of the earthquake is estimated at 6 points according to the MSK-64 scale. There is no claim of damage," announced IGJEUM.
