New Head of Competition Authority Appointed
Denar Biba is appointed head of the Competition Authority. The Parliament of the Republic voted this Thursday with 72 votes in favour, 37 against and no abstentions, Biba's candidacy from the Socialists to head the Competition Authority.
Biba could not get two votes from the Socialist parliamentary group, one of which was warned against by MP Erion Brace, during discussions in the Committee on Economy.
Denar Biba, who was nominated for the post by 28 MPs, replaces Juliana Latifi at the head of the Competition Authority and is expected to hold a 5-year term in this position.
His candidacy was rejected from the opposition, where during the plenary session, the deputy leader of the Democratic Party, Jorida Tabaku, considered his appointment as inappropriate, as it turns out as a person who went to Strasbourg and blackmailed the judges regarding the property law of Albania.
"I want to dwell on two main moments. The Competition Authority is the main institution for the protection of competition in the market. This institution has failed. We in the committee are waiting for the chairwoman of the Competition Authority and today, two months later, she is still infected with the coronavirus. We have no decision in favour of the citizens to increase food prices. In the role of this institution, today on the Day of the Fight against Corruption, the Parliament will approve Mr. Denar Biba...
I do not know Mr. Denar Biba at all and I have never met him. But I know his position that he went to Strasbourg to blackmail the judges to defend the unconstitutional property law in Albania. I know the international reports of the EU, the Court of Audit, the State Department that today the most corrupt sector is the Public Procurement. He was asked to do something and he did it," Tabaku said.
