Powerful 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Turkey
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale hit western Turkey this Wednesday.
The epicenter of the earthquake was recorded near the city of Duzce, about 210 kilometers east of Istanbul. The tremors of the earthquake were quite strong, while it is reported that they were felt as far as Istanbul and Anakara.
BBC writes that 45 people were injured by the seismic tremors, 37 in Duzce, one in Istanbul, six in Zonguldak, one in Sakarya on the Black Sea coast and one in Bolu, in the southeast.
Panicked residents have taken to the streets amid fears of house collapse. There are reports of power outages in the region, as well as some residents jumping from balconies.
According to estimates, the depth of the earthquake is estimated to vary from 2 to 10 kilometers. After the 6.0 earthquake, a strong 4.7 Richter meta-seismic tremor occurred.
Meanwhile, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu has said that so far there is no information about loss of life. Photos from Duzce at night show people huddled outside, wrapped in blankets and using makeshift fires to keep warm.
Security camera images from the moment of the earthquake have been published on social networks. Duzce was hit by a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 in 1999, which left at least 845 people dead.
It followed an even bigger earthquake in 1999 in the city of Izmir, 100 km to the west, which killed more than 17,000 and left buildings in the region in a weakened state. About 80% of Duzce's buildings have been rebuilt since the 1999 earthquakes.
