SPAK Demands Dismissal of Met Kanani’s Case

The SPAK (Special Prosecution against Organized Crime and Corruption) demands the dismissal of the case for Met Kanani, described as the Albanian ‘Escobar’, currently in prison in Turkey.

The SPAK requested the dismissal of the case for three other persons. The case of Armando Gjini, who died after an assassination attempt in Mirdita, was also asked to be dismissed.

Met Kanini and two members of the criminal group were sentenced to 30 years in prison each and their property was seized by the Turkish authorities.

There have been 18 arrested within the operation "Force of Law", implemented thanks to the international cooperation between Albania, Greece, Turkey, Macedonia, Italy, through the mediation of DEA, SELEC.

These individuals, led by the so-called "Met Kanani", acted as a structured criminal group for drug trafficking. They carried out criminal activity in Albania and in other countries, mainly those of the European Union.

Police had strong suspicions that this criminal group operated on the heroin trafficking lines, Turkey - Greece - EU countries, as well as Turkey - Macedonia - Albania - EU countries. Another criminal activity uncovered by the investigations was the trafficking of cocaine from Latin American countries through the Balkan countries, to Albania and EU countries.

According to the Albanian police, more than 6 tons of cannabis were seized from this group in Greece, Turkey, Italy and Albania alone.

This proactive investigation has been pursued for months by the Narcotics and Trafficking Investigation Unit in the Central Investigation Directorate in the Criminal Police Department, under the direction of the Tirana Serious Crimes Prosecution.
