Albania's Supreme Court will not attend a meeting called by Prime Minister Edi Rama to discuss a new salary scheme for magistrates, the court has said.

In a response to the Prime Minister's Office, Supreme Court President Sokol Sadushi said that discussing the issue at this stage would be inappropriate because the new legislation on magistrates' salaries is already under review by the Constitutional Court.

Sadushi said the Supreme Court remained open to institutional dialogue, but argued that decisions on a constitutional matter currently before the Constitutional Court should be left to that court.

"For a constitutional matter that has already been submitted for adjudication, the word belongs to the Constitutional Court," Sadushi said in the response.

He added that dialogue on the issue could become "substantive and effective" after the Constitutional Court had issued its decision.

According to Sadushi, attending a meeting dealing with the same subject at this stage would simply result in the Supreme Court reiterating its existing institutional position.

The meeting, convened by Rama, is expected to address the proposed changes to the remuneration of magistrates, amid an ongoing legal review of the legislation.
