Tirana Court Orders Release of 27 Protesters, Rules 18 Arrests Illegal
A court in Tirana has ordered the release of 27 protesters detained during demonstrations marked by tensions, following a review of prosecutors’ requests to assess the legality of the arrests and determine security measures.
The court ruled that the arrests of 18 individuals were unlawful and rejected requests to impose personal security measures. For nine others, it ordered a reporting requirement, obliging them to appear before the Judicial Police.
The decisions were issued on October 22, 2026, as part of criminal proceedings involving alleged offenses related to the organization and participation in unlawful gatherings and demonstrations, resistance to public order police officers and, in some cases, property damage.
In one of the cases reviewed, the court declared the arrests of eight individuals unlawful and ordered their immediate release, unless they were being held on other grounds. The arrests of two other individuals were deemed lawful, and both were ordered to report periodically to the Judicial Police.
The court also imposed periodic reporting requirements on other individuals under investigation, in accordance with the schedules set out in the respective rulings.
The decisions follow demonstrations in the Albanian capital that were accompanied by tensions and multiple detentions.
