UK Sees 'Fiscal Amnesty' as Worrying for Albania's Democracy
British Embassy in Tirana considered the government's initiative for 'Fiscal Amnesty' for Albanians up to EUR 2 millions as risky for the democracy of the country.
This was stated in a Facebook post, after the meeting of Ambassador Alastair King-Smith with the Chairman of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party, Enkelejd Alibeaj.
Further, the Embassy stressed that the meeting discussed the importance of the role of the opposition in strengthening Albania's democracy and institutions and ways to address common challenges, including the fight against organized crime, corruption and illegal immigration.
"Following the beginning of the new Parliamentary session, the Ambassador met with the Head of the Democratic Party parliamentary group Enkelejd Alibeaj to discuss the current political situation and important upcoming reforms. They discussed the importance for all parties to act in the public interest, to promote electoral reform and to select candidates for the local and general elections who have no links to criminality or corruption.
The Ambassador recognised the importance of the role of the opposition in strengthening Albania's democracy and institutions. They also discussed ways to address the common challenges ahead, including on fighting organised crime, corruption and illegal migration, as well as avoiding legislation that would complicate these efforts, including worrying proposals on a fiscal amnesty", announced British Embassy in Albania.
