Albania, Violence Erupts in Many Cities during Protests over Police Shooting

Even the fourth protest in Albania over police shooting turned violent as many protesters throwed stones, strong objects and burned trees and trash cans not only in capital Tirana, but even in main cities as Durres, Shkoder, Elbasan and Korce.

Prime Minister Edi Rama apologized to the dead 25-year-old's parents days ago as Interior Minister, Sander Lleshaj resigned after police shot dead a young man, Klodian Rasha, on the Youth Day, but these actions were not enough for the protesters.

Several hundred people went ahead with the protest even on Saturday evening, ignoring an appeal by authorities to respect a pandemic-linked ban on public gatherings of more than 10 people.

They marched to the interior ministry then to Prime Ministry and in the area known as 'Ish Blloku' and some threw stones and other projectiles at police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons.

Meanwhile, in Elbasan protesters burned a tree and throw Molotov cocktails to police officers. Same situation was reported in Durres, where a group of youth burned some trash cans during their march towards the city center.

Klodian Rasha, 25, was shot dead early Tuesday. Police said he ignored officers’ calls to stop and ran away. One policeman has been detained over the incident, pending an investigation.

Interior Minister Sander Lleshaj said he decided to step down "as a human being and as a parent who modestly shares the pain with ... Klodian Rasha's family.”

The country’s main opposition party blamed Rama directly for the death and demanded his own resignation. The country is due to hold parliamentary elections in April 2021.
