EU Urges Greece Not to Block Albania's Accession Process

The European Union has clearly shown its position regarding the disagreements between Tirana and Athens on the Beleri case: 'Greece should not block the accession process for Albania'.

The spokesperson of the European Union, Peter Stano, in an interview with the Greek media, stated that the union does not intervene in bilateral disputes.

"We do not enter into bilateral disputes as we have confidence in the ability of the actors, especially if the actors are the EU member states and the states that will be part of it, to resolve this issue in order to have mutual benefit, implementing principles and rules."

According to Stano, both states have the relevant institutions to provide solutions.

"In this case, the rule of law applies, the law must be respected and if there are doubts, EU member states and also countries like Albania have the instruments and means to resolve such problems or disputes, in order to do not create unnecessary rifts in bilateral relations and do not raise bilateral issues at the union level, such as in the accession process."

The newspaper, "Kathimerini", citing official sources, announced that Germany and Spain are putting pressure on Athens not to block the opening of negotiations for the first three group-chapters.
