Ex-PM Urges US Ambassador to Apologise for 'Eat Grass' Phrase

Former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), Sali Berisha has underlined Friday that US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim must apologise for having used the "You will eat grass" phrase several months ago, in spite of it being a misunderstanding on the translational point of view.

Although Ambassador Kim was referring to corruption in her statement, as she released the phrase after Berisha was publicly designated by the US for "significant corruption", her interpreter (on purpose, or not) translated the phrase literally, awakening among the Albanians and political actors the dark times of communism, when long-deceased dictator Enver Hoxha used grass as a reference to food, implying that the country would not ask for anybody's help, regardless of the difficulties it was in.

According to the urban dictionary eating grass means the lowest level of bribery. It can be simple as taking a free ticket or a cup of coffee and do a favor in return by turning a blind eye to the law or certain rules.

"That grass phrase became famous. Enver Hoxha told the Albanians that we will eat grass and we will not submit to American imperialism, while the lady called on the democrats not to eat grass to vote for Sali Berisha. This is where she broke his relationship with Sali Berisha. I have stated that she will not meet with Sali Berisha without a public apology to the democrats. You should learn, despite being the representative of the most powerful country in the world, the most valued, but no one is free from mistakes and arrogance is not a virtue. She should apologize and then the rest will be discussed", said Berisha in his weekly media conference.
