Hungary announced that it would close its external border from all non-citizen/resident travel effective September 1, 2020. 

The Hungarian government has decided to close borders to foreigners starting on September 1, re-introducing the border protection measures in force during the first wave of the coronavirus epidemic, Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, told a press conference on Friday.

Starting on September 1, foreign citizens will be barred from entering Hungary, with a few exceptions.

Hungary’s infection rate is almost back to where it was five months ago.

The Covid-19 rates are rising again in Europe (second wave), and many countries, although not all, are bringing back the same travel and other restrictions they had in place this spring.

The situation in Hungary has been under control well, but even there, the cases numbers are inching higher.

This Covid-19 has affected the passport-free Schengen-zone that allows EU/EEA citizens to travel freely within the block. There have been plenty of obstacles this year.
