Italian MEP Prohibited to Met Veliaj in Prison

Two members of the European Parliament, travelled this Thursday to Durres to met the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

Those were Lorenzo Grassini and Roberto Berardi, who said that they came to Albania to show their support to Veliaj, but unfortunately they were refused to met Veliaj.

After this situation, through a video they said that were sad on the situation that Veliaj is passing, and want to say to him that they totally support him.

"We are here in Durrës with Senator Berardi to stay with the mayor of Tirana municipality Erion Veliaj and to see the prison conditions. Unfortunately, they did not let us in. They welcomed us well but told us that meetings are only allowed with family members," they said.

Their message continued "Unfortunately, as has happened in Italy, detention has become a problem because many political figures are detained for charges that we are not sure exist. Forza Italia is always in favor of those who are considered innocent until the last stage of the judiciary. We will see how it goes,".

Also, the MEPs compare it to an event in Italy during the Tangentopol period, hopping that Albania will not go through this kind of period.

"What is happening today is similar to what happened in Italy during the Tangentopol period, we hope that Albania will not go through such a period. We are against detention. This is similar to the Tangentopol case when detention was abused without considering the effects on innocent people but the wounds of the arrested people remain. If justice is done, but fair justice. Until proven guilty, we are all innocent," said Roberto Berardi.
