Kosovo Premier Reacts after Former KLA Commander Sentenced

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, stated that the sentence of the former commander of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), Salih Mustafa, with 26 years of imprisonment for war crimes, is an "outrageous" decision.

The Specialized Chambers of Kosovo, based in The Hague, on December 16 found Mustafa guilty of unlawful killing, arbitrary detention and torture.

According to Kurti, 26 Serbs have been convicted for over 12,000 killed and over 20,000 sexually assaulted in Kosovo.

"And yet they have received much lighter sentences than the one given today to Salih Mustafa, who fought not to conquer another country, but to liberate his own country," said Kurti.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo hopes that the independent institutions of justice will understand the injustice and will reflect on other levels of judgment.

"It is unacceptable when our liberator is judged more severely than the genocidal aggressor," Kurti added.
