Kosovo Reveals Possible Date for Kurti-Vucic Meeting
The government of Kosovo says that "there will probably be a meeting tomorrow (November 20) in Brussels" between the prime minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic.
This is what Government spokesman Pëparim Kryeziu said on November 19, adding that they will notify the public when this meeting is confirmed.
Despite the fact that the agenda has not yet been made public, the meeting is expected to focus on reducing tensions between the two countries.
On November 18, the spokesperson of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Peter Stano, said that they invited the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, to a meeting to find a solution for the illegal Serbian license plates.
"We have urgently invited both parties to Brussels to find a European solution, a European solution to the current situation, which is among the most serious since 2013, and this is the goal - to have them in Brussels to discuss the solution", said Stano.
Since November 1, when the Government of Kosovo started implementing the plan for the re-registration of cars with illegal Serbian license plates, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have increased. The first phase of the number plate plan involved reprimanding drivers who drive cars with illegal number plates.
According to this plan, the second phase starts on November 21st, which foresees a fine of 150 euros for all drivers of cars with illegal Serbian license plates.
The Government's plan envisages that all cars with Serbian license plates will be converted to Kosovo license plates by April 21, 2023. There are about 9,000 cars with such license plates circulating in the north of Kosovo - inhabited by a majority of Serbs - since the post-war period, in 1999.
