I Will Not Allow Creation of 'Republika Sprska' in Kosovo; Kurti
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has said that he will not allow the creation of a form of Republika Srpska in the north of Kosovo. Kurti made these comments in an interview for the Croatian media "Hina" on the eve of a new round of dialogue for the normalization of relations with Serbia.
At Kurti's meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Brussels on May 2, the draft of the status of the municipalities in the north of Kosovo will be presented, which is a key point of the negotiations.
Kurti, who was at the economic forum in the Greek city of Delphi, said that he has not yet seen the draft for the establishment of the Association.
The Serbian side prioritizes the formation of a community of municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo, which is foreseen by the Brussels agreement on the normalization of relations from 2013.
Kosovo, on the other hand, is trying to prevent that community from having executive powers, stressing that it does not want something like Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina on its territory.
"Given the insistence of Brussels, I will be happy to see what draft they have prepared, although I think it would be better if they presented it to me first in Pristina. However, I will ensure that what was agreed on February 27 in Brussels, the existence of an appropriate level of self-government of the Serbian community according to the highest international European standards for the protection of minorities, has been fulfilled," he said.
"But what we will not allow is the right to territorialize and create anything that would look like Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We will not allow a satellite prefix with a destructive essence that would undermine the citizenship of Kosovo", he emphasized.
Kurti claims that he sees similarities with Russia in Serbia's relations with neighbouring countries.
"However, our country is a normal democratic country that gives individual and other rights to its citizens, but does not allow territorialisation on an ethnic basis, because it is against democracy and the republic," added Kurti.
He said that he serves all the citizens of Kosovo regardless of ethnicity, social affiliation or religious affiliation and that in Brussels he will ensure constitutionality and legality in the entire territory of Kosovo.
"Sovereignty and territorial integrity is something that must not be violated. I want normal relations with Serbia, European relations, good neighbourly relations. The protection of minorities is important to us. But we cannot give the executive power to the local community because the executive powers belong to the Government and the municipalities".
"Also, we want to strengthen public services that will be offered to all citizens regardless of ethnicity and not offer them because of ethnicity. So, let's wait and see how the meeting in Brussels will take place", emphasized Kurti.
