Forty-Four Large Companies Left Albania in 2021

The number of large foreign-owned companies operating in Albania is significantly reduced. 

According to INSTAT data, at the end of 2021 there were 6,635 enterprises with foreign and joint capital in the country, while in 2020 only 6,035  operated as a result of the consequences created in the economy by the pandemic and the restrictions that were taken to curb it. 

But over the past year it turns out that there has been a decrease in the number of foreign businesses employing over 50 people. In 2021 there were 44 large businesses less than in 2020. In 2020 there were 720 large foreign businesses while in 2021 there were 623. The departures are mainly in the field of industry, the only activity with a decrease in the number of foreign businesses in 2021. 

But despite the decline in the number of large businesses coming from European countries, in total the number of businesses employing 1 to 4 people results in an increase. Foreign and joint ventures are mainly concentrated in the regions of Tirana and Durrës, respectively 68.9% and 12.7%. A total of 118,627 active enterprises are registered in Albania.
