Munich Airport Closes Down Due to Strike

Munich Airport, which is Germany's second largest, announced that all flights would be canceled on Friday due to a strike by its staff over pay demands.

"Due to the strike there will be no scheduled flights from midnight on Friday until 1am on Saturday," the airport's management company said. In total, more than 700 aircraft arrivals and departures were scheduled, which will not happen.

Only a few "special" flights will be carried out, for "humanitarian, medical or technical" reasons, as well as those that will transport participants to the Munich Security Summit, an international political-diplomatic "meeting" with the participation of many leaders, which will be held in this city from Friday to Sunday.

Verdi union has called a strike by workers at seven of Germany's biggest airports as negotiations over a pay rise continue. Frankfurt Airport predicted "disruption" to services and advised passengers to avoid going there.

The strike also affects the airports of Bremen, Dortmund, Hamburg, Hanover and Stuttgart. Unions and employers are negotiating pay increases for airport ground staff and security personnel. Last month Verdi went on strike at Berlin airport, causing around 300 flights to be canceled or rescheduled.
