Prosecution Starts Investigations over Cyber Attack on TIMS System

The Prosecutor's Office at the Court of First Instance in Tirana has included in the file of the investigation launched for the cyberattack against the e-Albania portal in July, the latest cyberattack against the TIMS system, which regulates entry and exit in the Republic of Albania.

On 19.07.2022, the Prosecutor's Office of the Judicial District of Tirana registered the criminal proceedings for the criminal offences:
"Illegal interception of computer data";
"Interference in computer data";
"Interference in Computer Systems"; AND
"Misuse of equipment", provided by articles 293/a, 293/b, 293/c, 293/ç, of the Criminal Code.

The object of the investigation is the cyber attack against the state institution of the National Association of National Archives of Albania, which summarizes all the official government websites in the Republic of Albania.

Likewise, on 09.09.2022, another cyber attack was carried out on the equipment and systems that are administered and managed by the Ministry of Interior in Albania.

These two actions, since they were carried out with the same typology and the cyber attack came from the same source, are being investigated in a single file.

Both at the moment of the first attack and in the second attack, the Prosecutor's Office at the Court of First Instance of Tirana took immediate action, operating with the urgent decision-making dictated by the dynamics of the actions.

In exercising its powers and in close cooperation with all law enforcement agencies and partners assisting the Albanian authorities, the prosecutor's office has carried out a series of investigative actions, including sending requests for legal assistance to several countries. Investigations related to these cases are complex and ongoing.
