Serbia to Hold Early General Polls by Mid-December

President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the Speaker of the Parliament of Serbia, Vladimir Orlic, announced on Wednesday the announcement of extraordinary parliamentary elections and local elections in several cities and municipalities, including in the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

Elections will be held on December 17, 2023 and in the provinces.

By announcing the elections, Vu?i? dissolved the Serbian Parliament that was elected on April 3, 2022.

Previously, in the Serbian Parliament, the Speaker, Vladimir Orliq, announced that the elections for local assemblies will be held in 65 cities and municipalities.

During a short address, Vucic wished the citizens "good elections.

He said that "we are living in difficult times for the whole world, in the time of global changes and in which it is necessary for everyone to be united to fight for the preservation of national and state interests".

"The campaign is an opportunity to unfold different ideas in a civilized way, to present programs, policies that should be implemented, but which should never threaten the vital state and national interests," Vucic said.

He wished everyone "good results in the elections" and said he wants the election campaign and the elections to be held democratically.

Speaker Orliq called on the citizens to participate in the elections, so that, according to him, Serbia as a society can show its "full democratic capacity".

On October 30, the Government of Serbia proposed to Vucic to dissolve the Parliament.

In the announcement of the Serbian Government, it was said that the holding of new parliamentary elections under the existing circumstances will ensure, among other things, "a high level of democracy and the reduction of tensions between different parties in society".

With the announcement of the elections, the pre-election campaign has officially started in Serbia.

The campaign will last until midnight on December 14, when the election silence will begin.
