The Acting Mayor of Himara, Jorgo Goro Resigns

The acting mayor of Himara resigned this Wednesday morning. The decision was made just a day after the court left him in jail on the accuse of duty abuse and corruption.

In a public statement he informed the Prefect of Vlora, Vangjel Tavo on his decision adding that he didn't want to resign in this way, but he had nothing else to do.

Albania’s Court Against Corruption and Organised Crime ruled on Tuesday that the acting mayor of the southern city of Himara, Jorgo Goro, should be held in detention for an undefined period.

Goro, a politician from the ruling Socialist Party, was arrested four days ago for alleged abuse of office. He denies the allegation.

In September last year, Goro was named in a criminal complaint filed by his electoral rival Fredi Beleri, an ethnic Greek politician, for alleged corruption involving state assets.

Beleri claimed that Goro, in cooperation with subordinates and cadastral officials, using forged documents, enabled the transfer of significant areas of state land in Himara to private individuals.
