Works Start for Restoration of Zvrnec Monastery
The monastery of Zvrnec will be completely restored. The administrator of the monastery, Father Jani, said that the works were decided to be carried out in the fall when the number of visitors decreases. They will last 6 months in order to be ready to receive tourists in the summer.
"The pandemic, the destruction of the bridge and the failure to function as a summer camp for boys during the winter season left its consequences and caused great damage. We finally got permission from the Ministry of Culture to restore all the mansions and repair the two surrounding walls that have collapsed. The first phase of the church is almost finished, only a few small works remain."
According to Father Jani, the monastery will return to its identity and is expected to be visited by a higher number of tourists.
"Almost 90% of tourists who come to Vlora also visit the monastery. Its restoration will bring more tourists and believers who have hope in the monastery that it is a very, very holy place."
The investment worth ALL 8 million was financed by the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania. It is thought to have been built in the 13th century and was inhabited by monks until the end of the 1800s.
