Tirana-Durres railway under construction

About 70% of Works on Durres Railway Completed

Work on the construction of the Tirana-Durra railway, with a link at the "Mother Teresa" airport, is proceeding at a fast pace. Almost 70% of the physical works have been completed, as well as 90% of the artworks that are part of this project.

The Deputy Prime Minister, at the same time the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku, together with the director of the Albanian Railways, Ergys Verdho, closely followed the progress of the works.

Minister Balluku described this project as one of the most important, emphasizing that the Albanian Government has long since launched a strategy for the revitalization of this sector, where Tirana-Durrës is the first project that will be followed by other projects in the future.

"It is one of the most important projects of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, a project that started a long time ago with a significant delay in terms of the funding approval part. However, all these have been overcome and today we have a construction site with satisfactory progress. We have 70% of the volume of work done, while 90% of the volume of artwork is finished. What is more important to say, the railway is one of the means of alternative transport, one of the means of transport friendly with the environment, but also with the finances of the citizens, and one of the means of transport that the European Union itself encourages and pushes forward for the realization of theirs. Albania has long since started a strategy for the development of the railway network. This is the first project that we can't wait to deliver," said Balluku.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Energy also focused on two other important projects in the railway sector, such as Vora-Hani i Hotit or the VIII Corridor project, projects that will be implemented thanks to the support of the European Union.

"Railway transport has the full focus of the government, it has priority in terms of our strategic plans and undoubtedly Tirana-Durres will mark the first project which will also be the first swallow for the return of this means of transport," underlined Balluku.

Director Verdho announced that the entire project is divided into four sections; Durres to Shkozet, Shkozet to Vora, Vora to Tirana and Kashar to Rinas, connecting the airport with Tirana and Durrës. From Tirana station to "Mother Teresa" airport, the travel time is expected to be reduced to 12 minutes, with three stops, while Tirana-Durres is estimated at 22 minutes, with eight stops.
