Albania Commemorates Gerdec Blast Victims

Albania commemorates this Wednesday 15 years since the tragedy of Gërdec, where 26 people lost their lives and more than 300 others were injured after a powerful explosion in a warehouse for the dismantling of ammunition.

As a result of this explosion, hundreds of houses around the area in Gërdec were also damaged.

The serious event happened on March 15, 2008. At that time, the Prosecutor's Office sent 28 defendants to court.

That time's Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu, escaped trial because he had the MP mandate, but the families of the victims still hope that the new justice will bring those responsible behind bars.

However, the event is being re-investigated again after 15 years. Fatmir Mediu is being retried as one of the former officials responsible for this tragedy.

Mediu is accused by the Special Prosecution of the criminal offense of "Abuse of duty" and Abuse of duty" in collaboration with a military subject-command cadre.

In January of this year, the son of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Shkëlzen Berisha, the name most mentioned in the international scandal of the dismantling of cartridges, was summoned by the Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK).
