Albania entered the fifth consecutive day of heavy rainfall on Sunday, with flooding continuing to create serious problems across multiple regions of the country. Homes, farmland and livestock have been heavily affected, while hundreds of families have been forced to leave their homes.

Authorities reported that around 200 families were evacuated due to rising floodwaters. While 150 of them have now returned to their homes, the remaining families are being sheltered in dormitories or temporary tents.

One of the hardest-hit areas is the Municipality of Dimal, where the Seman River overflowed, damaging 110 hectares of greenhouses planted with seasonal vegetables. Local officials estimate that around 500 hectares of land in the municipality remain underwater, with the village of Goriçan experiencing the worst damage. Many residents there rely almost entirely on greenhouse agriculture for income, and this year’s heavy rains have destroyed much of their produce. Similar conditions were reported in the villages of Çiflig and Arrëz.

In Saranda, approximately 500 hectares of agricultural land are underwater. The flooding has also caused the deaths of around 700 livestock animals trapped in stables. Despite efforts by families to save their animals, many were unable to act in time as water levels rose, leaving stables empty and submerged.

Flooding in the area has been aggravated by the collapse of the Çukë–Bërdënesh embankment, which has also led to 15 food-storage warehouses being submerged.

In the Vlora region, conditions have begun to improve. Twenty-two Roma families who had been displaced are now stabilised in tents, and water has receded from homes and farmland. Water levels in the Vjosa River have dropped by four metres, allowing the river to return to its natural course.

Heavy rains have also disrupted transportation. Roads in mountainous areas remain blocked, and even sections of new infrastructure have been affected. A major landslide near the tunnels on the Qukës–Qafë Pllocë road forced authorities to close the road entirely. The maintenance company has installed a temporary bypass to allow vehicles to pass.

In Maliq, Korça district, rainfall has decreased and conditions have slightly improved, but the previous four days of downpours have caused significant destruction. Around 150 families report flooded homes and agricultural land. In the wider Korça region, an estimated 300 hectares of grain fields have been submerged. In Pogradec, the affected area is smaller, with around 25 hectares of vineyards and grain fields flooded.

The ongoing rainfall has also disrupted electricity supply in several remote areas of southern Albania, where villages continue to experience frequent power outages.
