Albania Included in High-Speed Railway Plan
Europe needs to further improve its logistics, especially through the construction of modern high-speed rail networks, which will realize faster and less costly communication in the environment.
The Vienna Economic Forum said it has recommended to the European Commission to finance the construction of high-speed railway lines, one of which is proposed to pass through Albania.
The line that is proposed to touch Albania will start in Berlin, Czech Republic, Austria, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Hungary. A branch of this line is proposed to extend from Sofia to North Macedonia, then from Greece to Cyprus.
The railway should connect the most developed cities of Europe with underdeveloped countries of the continent such as Albania and other countries of the region. While the other proposed lines will connect the Baltic countries with Spain. From this line there will be another that will be extended to Italy and one to the UK.
The proposal aims to build a high-speed rail network of 250-300 kilometers per hour with four main lines connecting all EU capitals and (potential) EU candidate countries in the Western Balkans. The expressway is expected to enter Albania in the Shkodra region from Montenegro and then continue to Lezha and through the National Road to cross Kosovo and further extend to Bulgaria.
In total, the new high-speed rail network is projected to be 18,249 kilometers long. The extension of this line in the Western Balkans is expected to be 1564 kilometers long at a cost of Euro 49 billion. In Albania, the network is proposed to be 304 kilometers long, at a cost of Euro 7 billion.
