Albanian Young Man Tased to Death in Braintree Incident
A man who died after a taser was discharged multiple times during an incident last month has been named for the first time. Sali Byberi died during an incident in Braintree which saw officers discharge a taser after one of them was allegedly assaulted.
The incident took place in Clockhouse Way, Braintree, with two officers being called to reports of a disturbance at around 11.30am on November 21. The 29-year-old man's death is being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after Essex Police made a mandatory referral to the body.
The IOPC states that body-worn video footage showed whilst officers tried speaking with the parties involved, Mr Byberi allegedly assaulted an officer. They attempted to arrest Mr Byberi on suspicion of assault and were met with resistance from him, the office said.
A single taser was discharged multiple times and temporarily incapacitated Mr Byberi, and this device is being looked at by analysts. A short time later, he became unwell at the scene and an ambulance was requested.
Officers remained with Mr Byberi until paramedics arrived and provided medical assistance. Sadly, Mr Byberi died at the scene at around 1.15pm, and the mandatory referral by the police to the IOPC followed, the Essex News reported.
The IOPC said it has secured the officers' body-worn video footage as well as carrying out door-to-door enquiries and obtaining witness statements for the investigation. IOPC Director Amanda Rowe said: "Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mr Byberi.
"We have contacted them to explain our role and we will keep them updated as our investigation progresses. When a person dies following police contact, it’s important that we carry out a thorough and independent investigation which will examine all of the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
"After being notified by the force, IOPC investigators attended the address and assumed control of a forensic examination of the scene. IOPC investigators also attended the police post incident procedures, where officers involved provided their accounts. We will continue to gather evidence to enable us to piece together the events that took place."
