By-Elections: US, EU Ambassadors Meet CEC Head

US Ambassador Yuri Kim and EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca met with State Election Commissioner of Albania Ilirjan Celibashi this Thursday to express support for the CEC's (Central Election Commission) critical role in administering free and fair elections ahead of the March 6 local by-elections. 

Through a post on social media, the US embassy emphasizes the support for Albania towards a stronger demorcay.

"Ambassador Yuri Kim and EU Ambassador Luigi Soreca met with State Election Commissioner of Albania Ilirjan Celibashi this Thursday to express support for the CEC's (Central Election Commission) critical role in administering free and fair elections ahead of the March 6 local by-elections. 

Ambassador Kim underscored U.S. support for the fundamental democratic right of citizens to vote as they wish, in peace, free from threats or undue inducements. She urged the CEC to carry out its responsibilities in accordance with the law and international norms, including verifying the qualifications of candidates. She noted the responsibility of political leaders to ensure that the qualifications and qualities of their candidates reflect respect for Albanian voters and Albania’s status as a NATO Ally and EU aspirant.
