Tourism Season; KESH Starts Energy Purchases

The Albanian Power Corporation (KESH) has started the procedures of energy purchases, after more than two months without conducting any tendering procedures.

KESH seeks to secure 33,600 MWh of energy, necessary to cover consumer needs during the period June 2-8. The results of the procedure have not been published yet, but referring to prices on the Albanian Electricity Exchange, they go to around 70 euros/MWh.

The last procedure for energy purchases by KESH was held in mid-March. Meanwhile, the receipts from tenders held in the first three months of the year are estimated at around Euro 38 million.

According to data published by the Albanian Power Corporation, a total of around 268 thousand

MWh of energy were purchased, at an average price of 136 euros/MWh. In total, 10 tenders for energy supply were held during the three months.

This situation is different from last year since no procedure for purchasing energy was carried out until June, as the needs were met by the production of the Drini Cascade hydroelectric power plants. According to calculations, the bill for purchasing energy throughout 2024 amounted to about Euro 70 million.

These data once again highlight the dependence that our country has on weather conditions in terms of generating electricity. This, taking into account that about 94% of it is produced from water sources, while only 6% comes from photovoltaic plants.
