Bajram Begaj in the middle

Candidate for President, Begaj under Republican Guard’s Protection

Albanian Parliament will vote this Saturday on the candidacy of the Socialist Party (SP), Bajram Begaj, as President of the Republic.

From today until the waiting for taking office with ceremony in the Assembly, he will be protected by the Republic Guard, which will be responsible for guarding the next head of state.

If Bajram Begaj gets the required 71 votes, he will have to wait until July 24 to take office, the day the current President of the Republic, Ilir Meta's term ends.

According to Article 88, point 3 of the Constitution, "The President begins in office after taking the oath before the Assembly, but not before the end of the term of the outgoing President".

But, before Bajram Begaj's name gets the majority votes in Parliament, there are some other steps set out in the Constitution.

At 10:00, the SP Parliamentary Group met to approve the candidacy of Prime Minister Edi Rama for President.

In this meeting, the majority collected the signatures of at least 20 MPs, while the next step was that of submitting the candidacy to the Assembly, together with the signatures. The submission takes place within 12:00, otherwise the fourth round will end without a candidate for President.

In the meantime, the deadline for reviewing the candidacy is 16:00, by the Law Commission, which must give "OK" for the purity of the figure of Bajram Begaj, 2 hours before his name goes to the Assembly for voting.

Nevertheless, the mandate of the President in Albania is 5 full years and if he receives the support of the assembly, Bajram Begaj will be the 8th head of state after the '90s.
