The mayor of Himara, Vangjel Tavo, has issued an urgent call for residents to evacuate as a rapidly worsening wildfire moves toward the coastal city in southern Albania.

Tavo urged people to immediately leave homes, businesses and other areas at risk, emphasizing that protecting lives must be the priority as the fire advances toward populated areas.

“Due to the sudden fire advancing toward residential areas, we urge you to leave homes, businesses or other locations that may pose a danger to your lives,” Tavo said in an emergency notice.

He also called on residents to follow instructions from authorities and seek assistance from police, municipal police, firefighters and emergency medical services if needed.

“Remain calm and follow the instructions of the authorities,” Tavo said.

The evacuation warning comes as strong winds continue to fuel the wildfire, complicating efforts by firefighters and emergency crews to contain the flames and protect homes and residents.
