Former Greek President Passes Away

Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias, who served two terms between 2005 and 2015, died Sunday at the age of 92, as the Greek presidency said. He was born in the village of Molyvdoskepastos near Ioannina in 1929 and was the son of Lieutenant General Grigorios Papulias.

Papoulias, who was also foreign minister in 1985-89 and 1993-96, was a high-ranking member of the socialist PASOK (Panhellenic Socialist Movement) party and a close associate of its late leader and former prime minister Andreas Papandreou. He has also served as a MP of his Ioannina district for 26 years.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou paid tribute to Papoulias for his role in the resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II and against Greece's 1967-74 military junta.
