Govt Starts Indexation of Pensions

The indexation of pensions at the rate of 4.1% for 791,257 pensioners started on Monday (October 1). Indexing is done based on the calculation of the Institute of Statistics of the average annual index of August 2024 for basket goods for pensioners.

Indexing is a legal obligation of the social insurance scheme. The financial effects of the implementation of this decision are estimated at nearly Lek 1.7 billion for the three months of 2024 alone. The main aim of indexation is to preserve the purchasing power of pensions against price increases and the effects of inflation.

The government has warned that from the middle of this month, it will start the consultations for the revision of the pension scheme.

According to the Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation, Blendi Gonxhja, for the new scheme, the focus will be on establishing equality between professions with the same income.

On the other hand, he also stated that the year-end bonus this December will be higher than in previous years.

On the other hand, many pensioners consider the indexation as insufficient. They complain that the prices for basic products have increased at a higher rate, by limiting their purchasing power in recent years.
