Greek Prisons Overcrowded
The situation of the prisons in Greece is alarming, this is the conclusion reached by the Council of Europe, which carried out an inspection.
According to the report, it is noted that 11,827 convicts are held in the country's prisons out of 10,175 people, which are the capacities, or on average 110% more than their capacity.
In 15 of these institutions, it is reported that the capacities exceed 130%, even in Koridhalos at the time of monitoring, 152% more were held, Larisa prison with 134%, Patra with 137%, while the immigrant camp in Komotini had exceeded the capacity with 172%.
The record is held by the Ioannina prison, an institution in which 126 convicts were found "stacked" out of 66, which is its normal capacity. Let us remind here that in the prison of Ioannina, 80% of the convicts are of Albanian nationality.
According to the report, cases of violence, threats and blackmail by guards were also reported in the prison of Corfu. The monitors also said that there were violations in terms of the food supply system as well as hygiene in the kitchens of some institutions.
