Italy-Albania Agree on Building Migration Center in Shëngjin

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated during the joint conference with Prime Minister Edi Rama that a reception center for immigrants will be built in the Port of Shengjin and is expected to open next spring.

Meloni made the statement at the press conference with the Italian Prime Minister, who is in Rome, where the cooperation agreement for immigrants was signed.

"This cooperation becomes even more fruitful. A month ago, in a meeting we saw, we also had initiatives related to migration to take joint initiatives. This phenomenon is not fought alone.

We have worked together to strengthen cooperation and set three objectives, the fight against illegal traffic, not only the reception of refugees, and Albania will give its support, while Italy can operate with funding to do this type of selection. The refugees will remain in these territories and will be selected. In terms of population, we have 3,000 people, according to a certain regime.

This flow can reach up to 36 thousand people and this agreement does not include minors, pregnant women and vulnerable groups. The jurisdiction of these centers will be in the Port of Shengjin, a reception and screening center will be built and there will be another structure, while the Albanian part will deal with control and observation. Other arrangements will follow regarding this type of cooperation. We aim for it to be operational next spring", said Meloni.
