Tirana Municipality Appreciated for Management of Stray Dogs
Care and management of stray dogs by the Municipality of Tirana has been evaluated by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH).
During the regional conference held in Zagreb, Croatia, Albania was among the 11 participating countries.
One of the topics of this year was the management of the population of stray dogs, so the country was represented with the model of success of the Municipality of Tirana in this field. Veterinarians of the Consumer Protection Agency, the director under Tirana Municipality, who have been carrying out the process of sterilization, vaccination and registration of the city's four-legged friends for years, presented the work done.
"As of May 2023, the process started for years has been finalized with the opening of the first public shelter in Tirana, which has a hotel capacity of 1 thousand puppies. Currently, it is being followed in parallel with sterilizations and adoptions", Kostandin Puleri, Head of the Veterinary Sector, said during the presentation.
The Veterinary Shelter, which is located in Tufina, is equipped with the latest laboratory equipment, which also helps in the identification of zoonoses, at the service of the community. The shelter is open to volunteers, children and any veterinary students whose interest has been high during these months, taking close care of the puppies every Wednesday and Friday of the week.
