Opposition Supporters Gather in Tirana as Nationwide Protest Targets Albania’s Government
Opposition lawmakers and supporters gathered in central Tirana on Saturday for a nationwide protest outside the Prime Minister’s Office, as student demonstrations entered their 12th day amid growing calls for action over public grievances.
Members of Albania’s Democratic Party (DP), accompanied by supporters, marched from the party’s headquarters toward the government building along Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard.
Among the opposition figures taking part were lawmakers Flamur Noka, Klevis Balliu, Belind Këlliçi, Jorida Tabaku, Agron Gjekmarkaj, and Saimir Korreshi, alongside other party officials and supporters.
Shortly after arriving outside the Prime Minister’s Office, protesters set fire to cushions that Prime Minister Edi Rama had placed on a dialogue table, in a symbolic act directed at the government’s proposed approach to dialogue.
Saturday’s demonstration also coincided with the 12th day of student protests, with organizers calling for a nationwide gathering in the capital. University professors, doctors, and small-business trade unions have expressed solidarity with the movement, while students from other Albanian cities are also expected to participate.
Authorities have stepped up security measures ahead of the demonstrations. According to Top Channel journalist Dorjana Bezat, approximately 2,000 police officers have been deployed across the area to maintain public order and prevent potential escalation.
The demonstrations come amid mounting public pressure on the government, with protesters and supporting groups calling for their concerns to be addressed.
