Over 11.000 Clandestine Migrants Caught in Albania
In the first 10 months of 2020, 11,709 illegal immigrants were caught trying to enter or entered the territory of Albania. According to the report of the Ministry of Interior, compared to the same period last year, 3069 more illegal immigrants were caught.
Most of them use Albania as a transit country to move to European Union countries.
Most come from the Middle East, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. But there are also migrants from Egypt or other areas who do not have war conflicts, but the purpose of their departure is mainly economic.
The number decreased, according to the report, during the three months of quarantine, respectively in April, May and June, where the period with the lowest number of illegal immigrants caught illegally in the territory of Albania was marked.
The highest number is in September, specifically 1,993, a period that coincides with the normalization of movements, mainly at the borders.
The arrest of the migrants is as a result of police checks in cooperation with Frontex at border crossings.
Many of the emigrants coming from their countries of origin seek political asylum in Albania. This is done for their purpose to gain as much time as possible in our country and then flee illegally in the direction of Montenegro or Kosovo, with a final destination in Western Europe.
During 2019 alone, there were 6,604 illegal immigrants seeking asylum in Albania.
