Parliament Approves Removal of Ex-MP Berisha's Immunity

Albanian Parliament has voted votet this Thursday to remove the immunity of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, thus paving the way for his arrest with 75 votes in favor.

A day ago, the two reports compiled by the members of the Mandates Council were submitted to the Assembly, who voted in support of SPAK's request to pave the way for the arrest of Sali Berisha.

Both reports, both of the majority and the opposition, recommended to the Assembly the granting of authorization to the request of SPAK, which requires the removal of Berisha's immunity and then his arrest.

Both the Socialist Party (SP) and Democratic Party (PD) argued that the accusations against Berisha are not political.

In his long report, Enkelejd Alibeaj dwells on the facts that SPAK presented to Berisha, mentioning that the former prime minister is accused of changing some laws to favor the son-in-law in the privatization of the former Partizani complex.

Arguing why the authorization for his arrest should be granted, Alibeaj says that Berisha's confrontation with justice is an opportunity for the former prime minister to preserve his dignity.

In the SP report, it is stated that SPAK has sent a request that meets all legal conditions, while the decisions of the Courts must be respected.
