Bajram Begaj Elected President
Major General Bajram Begaj, has received the trust of the majority of MPs in the Assembly to be the new President of the Republic of Albania.
83 MPs participated in this process, where 78 of them voted for Begaj as new President, 4 MPs were against, while one vote abstention. What is interesting is the fact that one of the opposition MPs decided to vote in favor of Begaj as new President.
The Re-establishment Commission declared that the constitution was violated that's why they initially came to the Parliament but then they left, with some of the MPs, involving those of the SMI staying to vote.
On the other hand, the MPs of the opposition leaded by Enkelejd Alibeaj didn't participate in the session, as according to them PM Rama violated the agreement for a president above the parties.
Bajram Begaj, until this morning held the post of Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Albania, but with a decree issued by the outgoing President Ilir Meta, he was relieved of duty, thus paving the way for appointment in accordance with the Constitution. After three failed rounds, in the fourth round Begaj was nominated by the ruling party, the Socialist Party.
