Albanian PM Says Greece Has Its Right to Expand Maritime Border
Prime Minister Edi Rama pointed out Tuesday that every state with direct access to the sea has the right to extend 12 miles beyond the existing border where possible under the convention.
According to the Albanian Prime Minister, Greece is doing what Albania did in 1960 and this does not affect our country. PM Rama considers all the comments from the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, or the leader of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, to be intentional.
"What they do for me is intentional in order to play with national feelings to play with a patriotic sensibility to seize the opportunity to create a reason for disputes and to divide affairs among patriots in the lowest possible way. Greece in 1960 has done what Albania is doing today neither more nor less. Any state with direct access to the sea has the right to extend 12 miles beyond the existing border where possible, the convention says. Albania exercised this right in 1960 with a decree of the presidency of the popular assembly," Rama said.
Greece has approved recently the presidential decree for expanding its border in the Ionian Sea by 12 miles. This has caused debate in Albania, as the Premier is accused by the opposition of "selling" the sea to Greece. Anyway, the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, has guaranteed Albanians that he will do everything to protect Albania's borders.
