PM Rama Blasts Politicians for ‘Misinterpreting’ Greece’s Decisions on Sea Issue

Prime Minister Edi Rama has responded Sunday to accusations against the government on selling the sea as he visited Saranda in the Southern Albania. Greece’s decisions that have been misinterpreted massively have nothing to do with the sea issue between Albania and Greece, he stressed.

The Head of Government reiterated that the enlargement of Greece with 12 miles at sea has no impact on Albania, adding that Greece is in its right, but did not hesitate to label as "miscreants" people who, according to him, misinterpret issues of such importance.

For Greece to stretch 12 miles, it has to set the border at Memaliaj and then the whole maritime economy we have to move to Virua. It is not possible for Albania to extend 12 miles from here to Greece, nor vice versa, added the Prime Minister.

“If Greece stretches 12 miles, it means that us here in Saranda and you there, to speak from Greece. To clarify it once again, 12 miles is a right of every state. Greece has exercised its right. The Ionian Sea does not start in Butrint, a considerable part of this sea is across and across there is space for Greece to stretch 12 miles in rapport to Italy. No state can exercise this right arbitrarily, it cannot. Albania exercised this right in 1990 with 6 miles.

We will go to court, because we do not have an agreement, we could not agree, precisely because there is no space. And the idea that the sea can be sold as yogurt and the sale can be done secretly is a completely absurd idea, but the great regret is that there are so many two-legged fish, especially on social networks, that they take this absurdity for granted.

For this reason, those who have a public responsibility, who are party leaders, who are party representatives in Albania and Kosovo, and who speak to the public by fanning this fire, are miscreants. I do not know any other word except the word miscreant! Low, ignorant beings who do not deserve any respectRelations with Greece are absolutely very positive", underlined Rama.

Earlier on, Greece's Supreme Council of State (equivalent to the Constitutional Court of Albania) approves a presidential decree to expand territorial waters in the Ionian Sea to 12 miles. The decree covers the area north of the Ionian Sea, the Ionian Islands and the Cape of Tenaro in the Peloponnese.

On October 20, the Albanian and Greek sides agreed to address the International Court of Justice in The Hague to resolve the maritime issue.

Just one day after this agreement, PM Rama said that "The issue of the sea has not been opened by Greece, but Albania. Greece has no more claims than it received. That issue was reopened by me together with the SP in the opposition and allies of that time.

They finally agreed with us to take the matter to international justice, in the hands of a court that has all the powers to deliver fair justice on this issue.

This is an ideal solution for us who of course based on all protocols and standards will sit down and prepare to reach a fair solution. What we are looking for is clear, we are looking for a fair deal. Others are mental scandals".

He reiterated that the pretense of Greece with 12 miles at sea has no impact on Albania, adding that Greece is in its right, but did not hesitate to label as "jokers" people who, according to him, misinterpret issues of such importance.
