Tirana’s prison 313 has been Wednesday by a massive hunger protest as 150 convicts have decided to refuse food under the claim that it is “the same and scandalous”.

Revolt of prisoners has started in all correctional facilities of Albania, including prisons of Peqin, Rec, Shënkolli and Burrel. They inmates have thrown accusations against the Director General of Prisons and the Minister of Justice, Etilda Gjonaj.

Earlier, the Minister of Justice dismissed the director of the Peqin Prison, Bukurosh Malluta, arguing that he mismanaged the situation after some convicts went on hunger strike.

On Tuesday, dozens of convicts in Rrogozhina prison entered the hunger strike, joining other convicts in prisons. In a letter to the institutions but also to the media, the convicts list a series of demands, seeking all-inclusive 5-year amnesty without any criteria.

They say that life imprisonment should be defined and be 20 years like in European Union countries, as well as parole must be granted after serving 3/5 of the sentence. The special regime "41 bis" is considered a violation of rights.
